Rear Admiral HENRY C. BRUTON, received the Navy Cross while a submarine commander in World War II. The first of three came for his extraordinary heroism as Commanding Officer of a submarine in the successful conduct of an offensive war patrol from July 10 to September 1, 1942. Despite vigorous anti-submarine measures on the part of the enemy, Commander Bruton, available himself of every favorable attack opportunity with courageous skill and efficiencey, succeeded in sinking a total of 23,950 tons of enemy merchant shipping. Although, in one depth-charge attack, detonations were set off so close that personnel were jarred off their feet, he, by resourceful leadership and capable command, brought his ship through and his crew home without serious material damage or loss of life.
Admiral Bruton joined the Legion of Valor in 1963 and resided in Paris, France.
