Corporal Fred R. Grumley, received his Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism near Reims, France, on 15 July 1918. At that time, Mr. Grumley was serving as a corporal with I Company, 166th Infantry, 42 Division. After his rifle had been put out of commission, Corporal Grumley jumped to the parapet with hand grenades, with which he aided materially in compelling the retreat of Germans.
Mr. Grumley resided in Ohio.
