PRIVATE HAROLD L. SHIPMAN was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross personally by General John J. Pershing, the French Croix de Guerre with gilt star personally by General Foch of France, and the Military Medal by the British government, for extraordinary heroism on September 29, 1918. Private Shipman exhibited great courage against the Hindenberg Line east of Ronssoy, France, when a party of 40 German snipers while going to the rear, seized rifles and opened fire on the Americans. Private Shipman rushed forward with his Lewis gun and put the entire group out of action. During the engagement, he also silenced three enemy machine gun positions.
Records indicate that he was a member prior to 1933, and resided in Florida.
