The Navy Cross was awarded to FRED H. SUBERG for extraordinary heroism on the occasion of the collision between the USS SHAW and HMS AQUITANIA when the SHAW was cut in two and set on fire. This man refused to leave his post in the fire room, although the water was rising rapidly and he had reason to believe that the ship was sinking.

Mr. Suberg joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 and resided in Florida.
