CDR JOHN “MIKE” MIHALOWSKI, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role in the rescue of sailors trapped aboard the submarine Squalus in 1939. He and Bill Badders descended numerous times in a diving bell over a period of 16 hours to rescue 33 men.

CDR Mihalowski had been a member of the Legion of Valor since about 1946.
