The Distinguished Service Cross was awarded on 24 September 1942 to General, (then Lt. Colonel) WALTER CAMPBELL SWEENEY, Jr., USAF, for extraordinary heroism in connetion with military operations against an armed enemy. As a Bombardment Squadron Commander and a pilot of heavy bombardment aircraft, General Sweeney led his Squadron into action at Midway Island against the Japanese Fleet, June 3-6 inclusive, 1942.
