Mr. CHARLES ACKERS, is one of the few decorated for gallantry displayed following the tragic loss of the submarine Squalus. The Navy Cross was awarded him for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as a diver during the rescue and salvage operations following the sinking of the U.S.S. SQUALUS on 23 May 1939. His courage and devotion to duty in making repeated dangerous dives during the most difficult diving conditions characterizes conduct far beyond and above the call of duty.
Mr. Ackers joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 and resided in New Jersey.
