LTC JOHN L. TANNER, First Lieutenant in an Infantry Regiment, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism for actions on the evening of 17-18 December 1944, near Bobenthal, Germany. Under his leadership, he protected the left flank of the regiment by repulsing for 22 hours wave after wave of determined and well-supported attacks. He remained in the forefront of the battle and reconnoitered hostile dispositions and lead counterattacks.
