GENERAL JAMES A. VAN FLEET has been a member of the Legion of Valor since 1947. The first award of the Distinguished Service Cross was for action on 6-8 June 1944, in France. He landed in France and organized his troops and moved orderly across the beach. His superior leadership and personal example aided in clearing the beach and contributed to the rapid advance of the division to its D-day objective.
