Sergeant MATHEW G. GRAHEK, is one of the few who gained the Distinguished Service Cross in the Siberian Campaign during 1918 and 1919. On September 29, 1918, while a Sergeant with Company M, 339th Infantry, an element of the 85th Division detachment in North Russia, Sergeant Grahek voluntarily went forward about 150 yards in advance of the lines, exposed to heavy machine gun and artillery fire, and rescued a wounded comrade. The citation notes also that on April 1, 1919, near Bolshe Pzerka, Russia, Sergeant Grahek advanced alone with a Lewis machine gun against snipers concealed in a ditch and routed them.
Mr. Grahek joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 and resided in Michigan.
