Maurice L Mathey

Mr. Maurice L. Mathey received the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism north of Soissons, France, on 1 September 1918. He was then a private with Company F, 128th Infantry, 32nd Division. In an attack against a strong enemy position, supported by many machine guns, he, a runner, worked unceasingly in the maintenance of liasion and carried messages through the most severe machine gun barrage. On his last trip from the regimental post of command he was severely shell-shocked but continued through the barrage to the battalion headquaters and delivered his message.

Mr. Mathey joined the Legion of Valor in 1975 and resided in Wisconsin.
