LTC Hubert J Faltyn

LIEUTENANT COLONEL HUBERT J. FALTYN (then Sergeant), United States Marine Corps. For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy while serving with a Marine rifle company on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. On 13 March 1945, when all company officers had been rendered casualties in a drive on formidable and well concealed enemy positions, Sergeant Faltyn unhesitatingly assumed command of the Company. Disregarding the murderous enemy fire from the many caves on the high ground to the front, Sergeant Faltyn reorganized the company, running from platoon to platoon giving orders and shouting encouragement, and boldly led them forward until the objective was won. The next day, though wounded in a fierce hand grenade exchange, he directed the building of a road leading to the enemy positions, organized tanks for support, and personally led his company in a long advance against a series of caves and pill boxes. Again on 15 March, though wounded a second time, Sergeant Faltyn remained on the field of battle, and personally led his company up a rocky hill through deadly rifle and mortar fire. Having gained the objective, Sergeant Faltyn skillfully organized a defensive position, and through his heroic unconcern for his own safety, inspired his depleted force to hold the objective until relieved the next day. His courageous actions were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Mr. Faltyn resided in Oregon.
