EDWARD S. CLAPP received the Navy Cross while serving as Carpenter’s Mate on board U.S.S. Enterprise, 23 February 1943. Carpenter’s Mate Clapp was decorated for his extraordinary heroism and exceptional courage as member of a fire-fighting party during action with enemy Japanese forces. While fires were still raging on the gun gallery, Carpenter’s Mate Clapp, at great risk to his own life, proceeded to that dangerous area and threw overboard hot unexploded shells and unburned powder. With complete disregard for his own safety, he continued his search for other ammunition and persisted in his task of combating fire. His gallant devotion to duty and his alert action in removing a source of great danger to the ship and her personnel were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United Stated Naval Service.
Mr. Clapp joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 as a LIFE MEMBER and resided in Oregon.
