SAMUEL A. MORGAN, Private, Infantry, United States Army. For extraordinary heroism at Baanga, New Georgia Group, Solomon Islands, on 15 August 1943. Knowing that the hazardous mission involved almost certain casualties, he volunteered as a rifleman in a small party sent to rescue infantrymen who had been ambushed on the East coast of Baanga and were cut off from escape. While the officer in charge was searching ashore, Private Morgan helped rescue wounded men and attempted to silence the enemy’s 37mm, sniper and machine gun fire which had opened up as soon as their small boat had landed. While returning hostile fire, he was severely wounded in the thigh and hand. The outstanding courage and coolness he displayed were prime factors in the accomplishment of a dangerous mission.
Mr. Morgan resided in Alabama.
