ALPHONSE CARBONE accompanied ADM Byrd to the South Pole in 1933 as cheif cook on the historic Antarctic Expedition. He later served as a State House police officer on Beacon Hill for 17 years. From 1926 to 1930 he served with the Marines in Nicaragua. In 1935 Carbone was awarded the Navy Cross from President Roosevelt for his service in the Antarctic Expedition. He also received the Congressional Medal for Distinguished Service from Congress in 1966. At the start of World War II Carbone served with the Marines in the South Boston ship-building annex and was transferred to the 1st Marine Division. He was dispatched to New Zealand and in 1942 he was sent to Guadalcanal.
