CAPT Worth M Scanland

Captain Worth M. Scanland, USN, received the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism as commanding officer of the submarine, USS HAWKBILL, during the second war patrol of that vessel from 15 November 1944 to 5 January 1945. Pursuing highly aggressive and tenacious tactics, the then Commander Scanland launched a series of brilliant torpedo attacks against enemy shipping to sink a Japanese destroyer, a high-speed transport, and a sea truck, totaling 2300 tons. Despite enemy countermeasures he coolly and skillfully directed his ship and brought it safe to port. By his courageous leadership throughout, Commander Scanland served as an inspiration to his officers and men and upheld the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Captain Scanland joined the L.O.V. in 1978
