LIEUTENANT DEWEY FRANKLIN RAY, JR. For extraordinary heroism as Pilot of a Torpedo Bomber Plane in Torpedo Bombing Squadron EIGHTY FOUR, attached to the USS BUNKER HILL during an attack against a Japanese battleship, April 7, 1945. Skillfully pressing home a determined torpedo attack despite extremely intense antiaircraft fire which seriously damaged his plane, Lieutenant (then Lieutenant, Junior Grade) Ray courageously carried his torpedo in to close range through adverse weather and the added danger of heavy enemy fire from the main batteries of the battleship and the surrounding screen. Dropping one of the thirteen torpedoes which scored nine hits during the cocerted attack by the squadron, he contributed materially to the destruction of this capital enemy ship a short time later. His courage, airmanship and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Mr. Ray joined the Legion of Valor in 2003 and resided in Oregon.
