Kenneth C Scissons

ScissonsKenneth C. Scissons, United States Army: For extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. From 1 December to 5 December 1942 during a raid in Tunisia, upon the ambush of his unit by the enemy, Private Scissions seeing two of his comrades attempting to crawl to safety, did, without regard for his own life, engage the enemy with his rifle and drew their entire fire upon his position. Only after his comrades reached safety did Private Scissons attempt to withdraw, having accounted for approximately ten enemy soldiers. His coolness and courage under fire, and his desire to sacrifice himself, if necessary, for the safety of his comrades are a profound inspiration to members of the Armed Forces, and reflect the highest traditions of our country.

Scissons’ heroic actions were highlighted in True Comics. The half page strip starts off with: “December, 1942–an American Sergeant of Sioux Indian descent, Kenneth Scissons, of Rapid City, South Dakota, was leading his unit of commandos on a raid behind enemy lines in Tunisia.”

The comic strip ends with: “and trail-wise Kenneth Scissons is still on patrol in Tunisia with the american commandos, doing as good a job stalking nazis as would his Sioux Indian ancestors!”

Scissons was born on March 10, 1915 in Herrick, South Dakota and died on September 9, 1973. He is buried in Pine Lawn Cemetery, Rapid City, South Dakota. His daughter, Ruth Ahl from Henderson, NV, found Scissons application for LOV membership dated November 1, 1945 which was never mailed so she was most anxious to sponsor him for membership. Thank you Ruth for honoring your dad’s heroic deeds.
