“For gallantry in action on 20 October 1869, while serving with Company G, 8th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona Territory.”

Schroeter was born on July 4th,1837 in Luneburg, Germany, immigrated to this country in 1860, and joined the 1st Volunteer Missouri Cavalry in 1863. His MOH was based on his heroic action during the Battle of Rocky Mesa in the Chiracahua Mountains after an Apache attack on a stagecoach that left two civilians and four troopers dead. Schroeter died in 1921 after serving over 30 years of military service to his adopted country.

His remains were unknown until recently discovered by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. They were then re-interned with full military honors at the Miramar National Cemetery.
