Carl J. Sonstelie, United States Army: For extraordinary heroism in action near Montfaucon, France, September 26, 1918. First Lieutenant Sonstelie displayed bravery and leadership of a high order in the advance toward Montfaucon by going out ahead of the engineers, reconnoitering a tank route under fire, and urging the tanks forward. He located the resistance in the Bois-de-Cuisy in advance later rallying disorganized soldiers and enabling them to hold the Bois-de-Cuisy.
Sonstelie was born on November 12, 1889 in North Dakota. He died on October 24, 1960 and is buried in the Fort Bliss National Cemetery, Texas. His membership in the Legion of Valor was sponsored by Jerry Cecil DSC who was a classmate of Richard Sonstelie, Carl’s grandson, in the 1966 class at West Point.
