LTC Cleveland Lytle

CLEVELAND A. LYTLE was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism while commanding the 1st Battalion, 358th Infantry, 90th Infantry Division in France in September 1944. He rescued two soldiers marooned on the ice breaker of a demolished bridge in the Moselle River while under heavy fire from enemy mortars, small arms, flares, and a fixed machine-gun firing from the bridge. After the war he returned to Fort Mill, South Carolina, where he practiced law and served two terms as mayor. The Charlotte Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars honored his memory and services to their organization with a formal Resolution.
