GENERAL CURTIS E. LEMAY was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism on 17 August 1943. Although not required by obligation or duty, he directed a mission over Germany. In spite of heavy enemy fighter attack and anti-aircraft fire, he led the formation to the target and accomplished the mission. He joined the Army in 1928, became a pilot, served with the Eighth Amry and later in the China-Burma-India theater, and became Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Air Command. He retired as Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force in 1964, the last senior officer of World War II fame to leave the active list.
Mr. Lemay had been a member of the Legion of Valor since 1961.
