Staff Sergeant Donald D. Partridge, Air Corps, U.S. Army. Awarded the D.S.C. for extraordinary heroism in action while on a bombardment mission over enemy occupied Europe, 16 September, 1943. When the aircraft in which he was a waist gunner was attacked by enemy fighters, Sergeant Partridge’s right leg was shattered below the knee by the explosion of a cannon shell. In spite of great pain, shock, and loss of blood, Sergeant Partridge continued to man his gun. His inspiration to the members of the crew reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
Sergeant Partridge was on his twenty-fifth mission and was wounded in a running dogfight off the southwest coast of France. Despite his wounds, and with his gun splattered with blood, Partridge continued to fire until a second cannon shell knocked him down.
Staff Sergeant Partridge joined the L.O.V. in 1946 and resided in Illinois.
