Lieutenant EDWARD L. SPENCER, received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in World War I as a Second Lieutenant, 371st Infantry, 93rd Division. Having been wounded in the leg by machine-gun fire, he never the less continued to remain with his platoon, leading it successfully through an intense barrage of machine gun and artillery fire to its position. He remained on duty with his command until 2 days later, when his regimental commander ordered him to the rear.
Lieutenant Spencer, joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 and resided in Alabama.
