PRIVATE FIRST CLASS EUGENE J. FREDERICK, JUNIOR, United States Marine Corps. For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy on 28 February, 1945, as a rocket launcher operator in a Marine rifle platoon on IWO JIMA, VOLCANO ISLANDS. Private First Class FREDERICK noted three enemy tanks firing on and holding up the advance of his company. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite heavy enemy fire, he left a covered position, ran out to within twenty yards of the tanks and from a fully exposed position, fired upon and destroyed two of the tanks. Having expended his ammunition, he ran to the rear through an area infested with enemy snipers to obtain a resupply. Upon his return, he destroyed the remaining tank. His actions were responsible for the advance of his entire company. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Mr. Frederick resides in Maryland.
