FORD D. SMITH, Corporal, Company D, 4th Engineers, 4th Division, a veteran of World War I, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions on August 11, 1918 near Ville-Savoye, France. Leaving a sheltered position, he exposed himself to an intense artillery barrage to rescue a wounded officer. He carried him across the Vesle River to where he could obtain aid in taking him to a dressing station. He displayed utter disregard of personal danger while under heavy fire.
Mr. Smith had been a member of the Legion of Valor since 1981, and resided in Southern California.
