BRIGADIER GENERAL FRANK E. GARRETSON, (then Captain) United States Marine Corps. For extraordinary heroism and meritorious performance of duty as a commander of an assault company against enemy Japanese forces on Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, 1 and 2 February 1944. His company, prior to reaching the battalion objective, whereupon, in the face of heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, he aided immeasurably by his personal direction the reorganization and consolidation of the position from scattered elements of the Landing Team. Later, after a coordinated attack by tanks and infantry was ordered, he intercepted the tank support which had opened fire prematurely while moving up to the line of departure. In order to accomplish the latter, it was necessary for him to stand up, exposed to fire from the enemy and from friendly tanks. Pounding on the side of the tank, he succeeded in having the word relayed to cease all firing and at the same time gave instructions for the tank deployment during the impending attack. On 2 February, he and his unit participated in the attack that put an end to all organized Japanese resistance. His inspiring devotion to duty and gallant leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the naval service.
