George M. Theisen was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions on November 10, 1942, while serving in Company C, 1st Armored Regiment near St. Cloud, Algeria. An assistant tank driver, he, although shot through the neck, continued to perform his duties and fired the machine gun with one hand that silenced an enemy machine gun that was firing on American infantry.
