Mr. Herman Bartels, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to recognize his extraordinary heroism on 10 November 1918, at Marcheville, France. Then a corporal with F Company, 130th Infantry, 33rd Division, Mr. Bartels was maintaining liason with an adjoining company during a raid, when he personally cleared out two dugouts, taking a number of prisoners. He was later wounded but continued action until he fell.
Mr. Bartels joined the Legion of Valor in 1974 and resided in Illinois.
