Captain HOWARD G. RATH, received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism over France when the then Lieutenant Rath, while acting as leading observer of a flight consisting of three airplanes, was attacked by fifteen enemy planes. In spite of the fact that his formation was surrounded by an enemy five times as large, he carried out successfully his mission and bombed his objective. In the return running fight Lieutenant Rath and his pilot continued the unequal fight and succeeded in returnint to their airdrome with valuable information.
Captain Rath joined the Legion of Valor in 1963 and resided in Southern California.
