JAMES V. MURPHY, received his Navy Cross when the U.S.S. Mount Vernon was torpedoed by German submarines on September 5, 1918. Among the brave men on board the Mount Vernon, Mr. Murphy, then a Pharmalist’s Mate, 1st Class, was one of those singled out for his distinguished and meritorious service and for the splendid manner in which he conducted himself in aiding and saving the ship.
Mr. Murphy joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 and resided in Michigan.
