For extraordinary heroism while serving as a Corpsman with a Marine Infantry Company in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on the night of 6 October 1952. Although painfully wounded in the face and arms by mortar shell fragments while he was accompanying the assault platoon in an attack against a hostile strong point, MAUSEN, undaunted by the deadly enemy mortar, small-arms and grenade fire, repeatedly moved across the fire-swept terrain to the aid of stricken Marines. Unable to use his left leg when he was wounded a second time during the intensive action, he gallantly crawled about the devastated area in the face of persistent hostile fire to treat the wounds of his comrades. Wounded a third time, he courageously continued his efforts and refused to accept aid for himself until all the casualties had received medical attention. By his superb courage, exceptional fortitude and selfless efforts in behalf of the wounded, MAUSEN was directly instrumental in saving the lives of many of his comrades and served to inspire all who observed him, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
