JOHN H. GABBAMONTE, received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism on 23 June 1944, during action by the 357th Infantry near Dupreys, France. After seeing his unit’s bazooka soldier knocked out by an enemy tank, John immediately picked it up and proceeded to destroy three enemy tanks while loading and firing the gun himself, normally a two man operation. His action contributed to the annihilation of the enemy pocket on the Cherbourg peninsula.
