JOHN W. BARTLETT, United States Marine Corps Reserve, was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in action on Peleliu, Palau, Islands on September 19, 1944. He set a gallant example for his company while crossing a causeway under a hail of small-arms fire. It was reported that he stood up, shook his fist at the enemy and yelled “You damn Japs can’t do this to my men.” His son enclosed the above Associated Press photo of his father (on left) during the invasion of the island of Okinawa in June 1945.
Mr. Bartlett resided in Pennsylvania.
