1LT. JOSEPH P. DONOVAN is the recipient of another Navy Cross for his actions on 21 April 1969 as a helicopter pilot responsible for the rescue of seriously wounded Marines under similar conditions as cited in the first citation. On that day, even though his helicopter was damaged while in a hover to rescue a wounded Marine, he was able to deliver his wounded to the hospital at Danang. Determining that the helicopter was no longer airworthy, he took command of another aircraft and returned to the area. While loading wounded he was informed his gunner was shot. He lifted from the zone to evaluate the man’s wound and the damage to his helicopter. Seeing that the gunner was not seriously wounded and hearing that there were additional wounded, he volunteered for another rescue.
1Lt. Donovan joined the L.O.V. in 2003 and resides in Illinois.
