MAJOR GENERAL JOSEPH R. RUSS, a member of the Legion of Valor since 1959, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy near Kumbwa, Korea on October 21, 1952. He moved through intense enemy fire to the most forward elements of his command. He moved from rifleman to rifleman across the entire sector, directing the defensive positions and instilled in the men the will to hold the position.
