DR. KENNETH E. BEITLER, former artilleryman turned dentist, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism on D-Day in France, June 6, 1944. The first to debark his landing craft on an artillery piece, he went ashore under intense and well aimed machine gun and small arms fire. He supervised the placement of his weapon and continued through the day to direct accurate artillery fire to support the infantry. He was also a veteran of the North Africa landing in November 1942.
