PRIVATE FIRST CLASS LAUREN H. KAHN, United States Marine Corps. For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy while serving with a Marine infantry battalion on SAIPAN, MARIANAS ISLANDS, on 17 June, 1944. At about 0500, during an intense enemy counterattack, Private First Class KAHN scored hits on two Japanese tanks with his antitank rocket launcher and succeeded in putting them out of action. At this time, his supply of ammunition was exhausted and a third enemy tank was advancing upon him. With absolute disregard for his own safety, and in spite of the intense fire from enemy weapons, he climbed upon the tank and dropped two grenades into the turret. The grenades killed the entire crew and put the tank out of action. Private First Class Kahn’s display of outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Mr. Kahn joined the Legion of Valor in 1985 and resides in Illinois.
