Corporal Louis M. Brewer, a Corporal in Company H, 126th Infantry, 32nd Division during World War I was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action near Romagne, France, on October 9, 1918. According to his citation, when his platoon sergeant was severely wounded during the attack on enemy machine gun nests, Corporal Brewer took command of the platoon and led it forward. In so doing he was himself wounded, but refused to seek medical aid until the objective had been reached and the platoon reorganized.
