PAUL W. ANDERSON, Technical Sergeant, Infantry, United States Army. For extraordinary heroism in action on 12 October 1944, at Ca Del Monte, Italy. When his platoon was halted by enemy automatic fire, Technical Sergeant Anderson (then Staff Sergeant) rushed toward an enemy-held house and killed one enemy soldier with his rifle. Observing two enemy soldiers aiming automatic weapons at him from a nearby haystack, he opened fire, killing one of the Germans and seriously wounding the other. Entering the building, Technical Sergeant Anderson, aided by fire from a rocket launcher, forced six Germans to surrender to him. Then, dashing along the side of the building through a hail of enemy automatic small arms fire, Technical Sergeant Anderson tossed a grenade into a second doorway, wounding two enemy occupants of the room and capturing eight others. Technical Sergeant Anderson next entered an adjoining room and captured a lone enemy soldier. Glancing through the doorway, he noticed two enemy soldiers setting up a machine gun in the doorway of a barn approximately forty yards from his position. His rifle empty, Technical Sergeant Anderson picked up an enemy machine pistol from the floor, and opened fire on the two Germans, killing both of them. His intrepid actions were an inspiration to all who witnessed his performance and exemplify the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States. Entered military service from Rockford, Illinois.
Mr. Anderson resided in Illinois.
