COLONEL R. M. RHOTENBERRY, then Lieutenant Rhotenberry was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action in the vicinity of Yongdong-ni, Korea on the night of 6 and 7 November 1950. His company was attacked by a concealed enemy machine gun. He moved through a hail of enemy fire, rounded up his men, and returned to them to their positions. He found an abandoned light machine gun nearby and directed intense fire on the enemy forcing them to withdraw.
