Raymond G. Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty for actions on 3 February 1953, although painfully wounded, he refused medical aid and continued to lead his men up a fire-swept Korean hill. When reinforcements were needed, he employed part of his unit and personally killed 2 of the enemy with his pistol. When the units began to disengage, he remained behind to cover the friendly forces. Then, when his unit was down, he went back up for a final check for the missing Marines from other units. He located and carried the bodies back down the hill. Wounded a second time he continued to engage the enemy until all the wounded were evacuated. Then, and only then, would he allow medical treatment for himself.
Mr. Murphy resided in Colorado.
