Robert A Bridges

Chief Boatswain’s Mate Robert A. Bridges, U.S. Navy was awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism while serving on board a Landing Craft Tank (5) during the invasion of France, June 6, 1944.

Exposing himself to heavy machine-gun and artillery fire, Chief Petty Officer Bridges worked tirelessly in an effort to unload vehicles and personnel from the ship. The evacuation of the wounded from his own ship completed, he boarded another LCT, manned a 20-mm gun and engaged an enemy machine gun nest, enabling soldiers to move forward on the beach without opposition from this emplacement. His cool courage, initiative, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Mr. Bridges joined the L.O.V. in 1979.
