CAPT ROBERT K.R. WORTHINGTON, then Lieutenant, for extraordinary heroism in action with the enemy in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of a United States Submarine during a war patrol of that vessel. Tenaciously attacking the enemy at every quarter, he launched aggressive attacks which resulted in sinking enemy ships for a total of more than 20,000 tons. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
