As a member of the 45th Infantry in Korea, he found his outpost coming under intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. This was followed by a large-scale attack upon his small position. Constantly exposed to withering fire, he moved among his men, directing their defense. When the enemy moved in on the outpost under a hail of grenades. Roger retrieved them as they fell, lobbing them back accurately and inflicting heavy casualties. This display continued for 30 minutes until a grenade detonated in his hand, severely wounding him. Refusing evacuation he called in artillerty and mortar fire on the enemy until the enemy withdrew with heavy losses.
