SHELDON HOARD KINNEY, was a former commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy and saw combat in three wars. In 1943 , he took command of the USS Bronstein and received the Navy Cross after his ship sunk three German U-Boats in one night and put a fourth out of action. Adm. Carney, Chief of Naval Operations from 1953 to 1955, stated the battle was “the most concentrated and successful antisubmarine action by a U.S. Navy ship during WWII.
