Corporal THOMAS STERLING was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross while a member of the 354th Infantry for actions near Remonville, France, on 1 November 1918, with two other soldiers, attacked with pistols an enemy machine gun position which had delayed the advance of his unit. He captured three guns and nine prisoners. Immediately turning one of the captured machine guns against other enemy positions, he enabled the Infantry to advance to its objective with a minimum of casualties.
Although Mr. Stirling was then a teen-ager from Scotland, he voluntarily enlisted at Denver, Colorado, in the United States Army to serve his adopted country. Mr. Sterling was the National Commander of the Legion of Valor during 1961 and 1962.
