Captain M. T. SELIGMAN received his second Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism as Executive Officer of the USS LEXINGTON in action against Japanese forces in the Coral Sea on May 7 and 8, 1942. In addition to directing damage and fire-fighting parties during and after the battle, Commander Seligman also inspected all critical parts of the ship and in many instances personnally assisted in removal of the wounded. His capable leadership and timely decisions were largely responsible for the small loss of life that occurred when the ship was finally abandoned.
Captain Seligman is one of the few who received the Navy Cross in each World War. He joined the Legion of Valor in 1962 and resided in Southern California. View Captain Seligmans’ Navy Cross citation.
